Joule heating induced by vortex motion in a type-II superconductor

چکیده
We present experiments that determine the temperature increase in a type-II superconductor due to Joule heating induced by vortex motion. The effect of Joule heating is detected by comparing the response of the vortex lattice to fixed amplitude current steps of short ~10 ms! and long ~4 s! duration, where the Joule heating is negligible and saturates, respectively. The thermometry is based on the temperature dependence of the voltage response of the vortex lattice to a driving current. By monitoring the temperature increase in NbSe2 samples adhered on a sapphire substrate with GE varnish we obtain the effective heat transfer coefficient between the sample and the bath and show that the heating is primarily due to the power dissipated by the vortex motion.

Potential landscape of a clean superconductor mapped by pm/s-moving vortices
We investigated vortex dynamics in a pristine sample of type II superconductor NbSe2 by scanning tunneling microscopy at 4.2 K. The decay of the magnetic field at ∼ nT/s in our superconducting magnet induced the motion of vortices at ∼ pm/s. Characteristics of the trajectories and speed variations of the moving vortices clearly revealed the potential landscape of vortices in the sample. Our vor...
متن کاملUnsteady Hydromagnetic Flow of Eyring-Powell Nanofluid over an Inclined Permeable Stretching Sheet with Joule Heating and Thermal Radiation
The present analysis deals with an unsteady magnetohydrodynamic flow of Eyring-Powell nanofluid over an inclined permeable stretching sheet. Effects of thermal radiation, Joule heating, and chemical reaction are considered. The effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis on the flow over the permeable stretching sheet are discussed. Using Runge-Kutta fourth-order along with shooting technique...
متن کاملCalorimetric readout of a superconducting proximity-effect thermometer
A proximity-effect thermometer measures the temperature dependent critical supercurrent in a long superconductor normal metal superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction. Typically, the transition from the superconducting to the normal state is detected by monitoring the appearance of a voltage across the junction. We describe a new approach to detect the transition based on the temperature increas...
متن کاملAndreev current-induced dissipation in a hybrid superconducting tunnel junction.
We have studied hybrid superconducting microcoolers made of a double superconductor-insulator-normal metal tunnel junction. Under subgap conditions, the Andreev current is found to dominate the single-particle tunnel current. We show that the Andreev current introduces additional dissipation in the normal metal equivalent to Joule heating. By analyzing quantitatively the heat balance in the sys...
متن کاملFluid Flow and Mixing within Drops in Ac Electrowetting
Electrowetting generates flow patterns inside drops when AC voltages are employed. For AC frequencies around the drop eigenfrequency (typically O(1kHz) or less), capillary waves emanate from the contact line giving rise to a net motion in the bulk of the drop. This flow can be described by a capillary wave-driven Stokes drift. At higher AC frequencies (above 10kHz, depending on liquid conductiv...
